Eight Best Classic Sports Cars of the 60's
Some of the most beautiful cars in the world were produced during the 60's. However, with the recent increase in environmental awareness, emission control regulations and everybody clamoring to reduce their carbon footprint, some of the world's greatest cars are being forced off the road. These super machines are slowly fading away, out of sight and out of mind, left to rust away, forgotten. This list is a tribute to some of these wonderful cars, the greatest sports cars of the 60's.
1. Ferrari 250 GTO
Classed by many not just as the best sports car of the 60's but of all time, the 250 GTO is certainly one of the best Ferraris ever made, which goes a long way toward the title.
2. Porsche 911
This Porsche in its many incarnations remains one of the most popular sports cars in the world. Not just a pretty face, the 911 is quite simply one of the few supercars that remains a pleasure to drive in spite of the tremendous power underneath the hood. Due to the sheer number of models available, the 911 is also one of the most accessible supercars in the world, with used models going for prices within most people's budgets.
3. Lamborghini Miura
This car was the trend-setter for mid-engine cars, made popular when people realized that like the Miura, mid-engine cars can be attractive as well as powerful.
4. Chevrolet Stingray Corvette
The Stingray is about as American as a car can possibly get. The very embodiment of America in the 60's, this monster of a car cannot be ignored on a list of this type.
5. Jaguar E-Type
Recently voted the most beautiful car ever made, and crowned best sports car of the 60's by Sports Car International magazine, the E-Type or XK-E was a competitively priced, high performance and exceptionally good looking car. The reason it is only placed at number five on this list is simply due to the monstrous amount of mechanical problems that plague these cars.
6. Shelby AC Cobra
A small, British frame made this car exceptionally light and when coupled with a powerhouse Ford V8 engine this car made history in the UK. It was also single-handedly responsible for the introduction of speed limits on British streets. That kind of notoriety just cannot be bought!
7. Lotus Elan
The original 60's Elan, produced in 1962 by Lotus was a roadster designed to replace the Elite. The Lotus Elan was techonologically advanced, featuring 4-wheel independent suspension, disc brakes and a twin-cam engine. You could also buy them as kit cars to assemble at home.
8. Ford Mustang
A classic American muscle car, the Mustang is Ford's third oldest nameplate still in production today. The original boasted a powerful V8 engine and was the first in the so-called “pony car” class.
